The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has ramped up its crackdown on reckless driving, leading to the cancellation and suspension of licenses for five individuals involved in a dangerous incident in the Central Division. This initiative underlines the LTA’s dedication to enhancing road safety across the region.
Irimaia Rokosawa, the Chief Executive Officer of LTA, confirmed that these drivers were captured on video last month executing perilous overtaking maneuvers on Mead Road in Nabua. The repercussions are substantial: three licenses have been cancelled for one year, while the other two have been suspended for six months.
“What we witnessed in that video was extremely irresponsible and completely unacceptable,” stated Mr. Rokosawa. He underscored the critical importance of road safety, pointing out that such reckless actions jeopardize the safety of innocent road users. The LTA is committed to its role as a road safety regulator, prioritizing the protection of all individuals on the road.
Rokosawa also expressed gratitude for public participation in reporting unsafe driving behaviors, acknowledging the essential role that community vigilance plays in fostering safer roads. He said, “We appreciate the continued support and vigilance of the public. Your cooperation plays a vital role in helping us keep our roads safe and protect lives.”
Beyond the immediate sanctions, the LTA is actively pursuing showcause proceedings against drivers with a history of violating safety regulations. In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, the authority is conducting joint operations to monitor hazardous driving behaviors through spot checks, vehicle inspections, and speed assessments.
He elaborated on the broader consequences of reckless driving, remarking, “Every time someone chooses to drive recklessly, they endanger not only their own life but also the lives of others.” Mr. Rokosawa urged all drivers to respect speed limits, avoid distractions, and acknowledge the rights of other road users, stressing that responsible driving is pivotal to saving lives.
In the year 2025 alone, LTA’s proactive measures have led to the cancellation of 19 licenses and the suspension of 48 others, alongside numerous warnings aimed at encouraging responsible driving practices. However, Fiji’s road fatality statistics show a concerning rise, with the current death toll at 62 compared to 46 in the same period last year. This serves as a potent reminder of the pressing need for constant vigilance and accountability among drivers.
As the LTA intensifies its enforcement efforts, there is optimism that these actions will contribute to safer roads and a decrease in traffic incidents throughout Fiji. The authority’s engagement with the public further underscores the necessity of collaboration in fostering a culture of safe driving.
