The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has recently intensified its efforts against reckless driving, resulting in the cancellation and suspension of licences for five drivers implicated in a dangerous incident in the Central Division. This decisive action is part of the LTA’s commitment to ensuring road safety in the region.
Irimaia Rokosawa, the LTA Chief Executive Officer, confirmed that the drivers were recorded on video last month engaging in perilous overtaking maneuvers along Mead Road in Nabua. The consequences for these actions are significant: three licences have been cancelled for a year, while two others have been suspended for a period of six months.
“What we witnessed in that video was extremely irresponsible and completely unacceptable,” stated Mr. Rokosawa. He emphasized the importance of maintaining safety on the roads, commenting that the reckless behavior exhibited endangered the lives of innocent road users. The LTA recognizes its obligation as a road safety regulator to ensure the safety of all users.
Rokosawa expressed appreciation for public involvement in reporting such incidents, highlighting the crucial role community vigilance plays in promoting safer roads. He remarked, “We appreciate the continued support and vigilance of the public. Your cooperation plays a vital role in helping us keep our roads safe and protect lives.”
In addition to these recent sanctions, the LTA is continuing to pursue showcause proceedings against drivers who frequently breach safety regulations. Joint operations with the Fiji Police Force are currently underway, facilitating monitoring of hazardous behaviors through spot checks, vehicle inspections, and speed assessments.
He further communicated the broader implications of reckless driving, stating, “Every time someone chooses to drive recklessly, they endanger not only their own life but also the lives of others.” Mr. Rokosawa urged all drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, and respect the rights of all road users, emphasizing that responsible driving is essential to saving lives.
So far in 2025, the LTA’s proactive measures have resulted in the cancellation of 19 licences and the suspension of 48, alongside numerous warnings aimed at promoting responsible driving practices. Unfortunately, Fiji’s road fatality statistics reveal that the current death toll stands at 62, a noteworthy increase from 46 in the same timeframe last year. This serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for ongoing vigilance and accountability in driving.
As the LTA continues to enforce its stringent measures, there is a sense of hope that these actions will ultimately lead to safer roads and a reduction in traffic-related incidents throughout Fiji. The authority’s engagement with the community and commitment to education highlight the necessity of teamwork in fostering a safer driving culture.
