The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has taken firm action by cancelling and suspending the licenses of five drivers involved in reckless driving incidents in the Central Division. According to LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa, these dangerous activities, which were captured on video by members of the public last month, showed drivers performing hazardous overtaking maneuvers on Mead Road in Nabua, thereby endangering the safety of motorists, passengers, and pedestrians.
In response to these incidents, three drivers will have their licenses revoked for one year, while the licenses of two others are suspended for six months. Rokosawa expressed condemnation for the actions featured in the footage, labeling them as “extremely irresponsible and completely unacceptable.” He reaffirmed the LTA’s ongoing commitment to enforcing road safety measures and announced that showcause proceedings would continue against drivers who violate traffic regulations.
The LTA is collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to implement joint enforcement operations aimed at reducing high-risk behaviors on the roads. These operations will include spot checks, vehicle inspections, speed monitoring, and the strict enforcement of traffic laws. From January 1 to October 23 of this year, the LTA has cancelled 19 driver licenses and suspended 48 due to repeated traffic violations. Additionally, they have issued over 4,400 warnings and provided counseling to 95 drivers during this time period.
Current statistics reveal an alarming rise in road fatalities in Fiji, with the number reaching 62 as of October 29, 2025, compared to 46 in the previous year. Key factors contributing to these fatalities include speeding, improper overtaking, and dangerous driving behaviors.
Despite these concerning trends, there is hope as authorities continue their efforts to combat reckless driving and promote road safety. Increased public reporting and community engagement are vital in fostering a culture of responsible driving. The proactive measures taken by the LTA not only reflect their dedication to safety but also serve as a reminder to all drivers to uphold their responsibilities, which could ultimately lead to safer roads for everyone in Fiji.
