Counterstroke Fiji has highlighted a pressing issue in the nation: many individuals remain unaware of where to access support for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). To tackle this challenge, President Elizabeth Fong announced the organization’s commitment to enhancing the Fiji Wellness Coalition. This coalition unites various non-government organizations that operate at the grassroots level, directly addressing the prevalence of NCDs within local communities.
Fong underscored the need for collaboration, stating that by pooling resources and expertise, the coalition can effectively boost education, support, and awareness, thereby empowering citizens to make healthier choices and mitigate the impact of NCDs across the country. The coalition’s initiative aims not only to inform but also to equip communities with the tools they need to take charge of their health, promote preventive practices, and foster a stronger culture of wellness throughout Fiji.
In further remarks, Fong mentioned the opportunity presented by events such as World Diabetes Day, where the coalition can leverage the public’s attention on health issues to disseminate important messages about other conditions, such as strokes. She emphasized that the responsibility to combat NCDs lies with everyone, as these ailments affect individuals of all ages, calling for proactive participation from the community in prevention and awareness initiatives.
Margaret Reid-Rounds, Chair of the NGO Coalition, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of sharing information to enhance awareness across communities. She mentioned their strong conviction in collaboration, reflected in the coalition’s logo symbolizing unity and collective health efforts. By connecting various organizations and resources, the coalition aims to ensure that accurate health information is disseminated widely, empowering local leaders and fostering collective action to effectively prevent and manage NCDs.
This collaborative approach not only signifies a promising step towards tackling public health challenges but also fosters community engagement in healthier living, reflecting a hopeful outlook for the wellbeing of the people of Fiji.
