Post Fiji Pte Limited has unveiled a unique series of commemorative stamps dedicated to Fiji’s distinctive periodical cicada, the Raiateana knowlesi, which is locally referred to as the nanai. This launch was highlighted by Deputy Board Chair Radhika Karunaratne, who described the nanai as a captivating and enigmatic emblem of Fiji’s natural legacy. The nanai holds a special place globally, being one of only nine periodical cicadas in the world and uniquely the sole species located in the Southern Hemisphere, making it notable for its extraordinary synchronized emergence every eight years.
The nanai inhabits regions within the provinces of Namosi, Nadroga-Navosa, and Serua on the island of Viti Levu. It is not only a remarkable natural phenomenon but also a symbol of Fiji’s rich biodiversity. Its cultural importance is further highlighted by its depiction on the Fijian hundred-dollar bill, underscoring its status as a cultural symbol and totem in local traditions. Despite its significant biological and cultural role, the intricate life cycle of the cicada, which involves eight years of subterranean development before a dramatic emergence, remains unfamiliar to many Fijians.
The stamp series is designed to celebrate the nanai’s unique life cycle while also aiming to boost cultural and ecological awareness regarding this natural marvel. Traditionally, the cicada has been associated with prosperity and wealth in local customs. By featuring such representations on stamps, Fiji continues its dedication to honoring and preserving its natural and cultural heritage.
This initiative is part of broader educational efforts within Fiji, such as the Nanai Cicada Education Program, which is committed to informing students about the cicada’s ecological and cultural significance. This educational strategy integrates scientific knowledge with cultural traditions, highlighting the interconnectedness of biodiversity and human culture.
Stamps often take on the role of cultural ambassadors, and Post Fiji’s cicada stamps, along with previous commemorative editions, offer an opportunity to showcase Fiji’s distinct environmental heritage. Through these philatelic works, Post Fiji enhances awareness and appreciation for the nation’s natural wonders, ensuring these narratives are valued both locally and internationally.
