Fiji is on the cusp of becoming a leader in recycling with the launch of its new program, Return and Earn Fiji, set to begin next year. This innovative initiative will allow citizens to earn money by returning their plastic waste, specifically PET bottles and aluminum cans of any brand, to designated collection points. For every container returned, participants will receive a reward of five cents. This program is designed not only to reduce litter and enhance recycling efforts but also to create an additional source of income for residents.
Dwain Qalovaki, a representative from Return and Earn Fiji, stated that the organization operates as a not-for-profit entity and will manage the collection of beverage containers. The collected materials will be processed and sent to facilities located on both Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, before being forwarded to certified recyclers overseas. The program aims to establish a minimum of 50 collection sites across the country, with the full rollout expected by mid-next year.
The Fiji government, led by Permanent Secretary for Environment Dr. Sivendra Michael, is finalizing regulations to support this container deposit scheme. Discussions surrounding similar initiatives have previously indicated a renewed commitment to combat plastic pollution and enhance waste management, building upon a sustainable practices framework.
The Return and Earn Fiji program complements other recycling efforts in the country, such as the impressive work of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, which managed to divert nearly five million kilograms of recyclables from landfills last year. These advancements not only highlight a commitment to environmental sustainability but also mark a significant shift towards fostering a culture of recycling and responsible waste management within Fiji’s communities.
