Crackdown on Speeding: Fiji's Portable Cameras Record 15,000 Violations in Two Months

Fiji launches portable speed cameras to crack down on speeding

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is ramping up its initiatives to curb traffic violations, especially speeding, with the recent introduction of portable speed cameras across Fiji. In just two months since their deployment, these cameras have identified over 15,000 instances of speeding, underscoring an urgent need for more stringent enforcement of traffic regulations.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that speeding remains a significant factor in road fatalities, with 37 out of 62 deaths recorded in 2025 attributed to excessive speed. Since the installation of 12 portable cameras in September, the Western Division has reported 8,624 violations, the Central-Eastern region 5,314, while the Northern Division recorded 1,651 violations.

Rokosawa reiterated the seriousness of adhering to speed limits, which are enforceable laws, and warned that repeat offenders could face severe repercussions, including the potential suspension or cancellation of their driving licenses. In the previous year alone, the LTA had canceled 19 licenses and suspended 48, in addition to issuing thousands of violation warnings.

These cameras are strategically placed in high-risk areas, particularly near schools, and utilize advanced technology for precise evidence collection and fair enforcement. This initiative is part of the LTA’s commitment to promoting responsible driving behaviors and seeks to significantly reduce the number of traffic-related fatalities.

The combination of strict enforcement through portable cameras and ongoing educational campaigns reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing road safety in Fiji. Authorities are hopeful that these concerted efforts will lead to a positive shift in driving habits, resulting in safer roads for all users. These proactive measures highlight a commitment to decreasing accidents and saving lives, paving the way for a safer future on Fiji’s roads.
