The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has revealed the next phase of the Na Vualiku Tourism Development Program, with a presentation from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, in Parliament.
This upcoming stage will introduce a pilot grants program aimed at Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises as well as community-based tourism groups. The program will officially launch on December 11 in Labasa and Savusavu, and on December 12 in Taveuni.
The primary goal of the initiative is to assist small tourism operators in Vanua Levu and Taveuni in expanding their businesses through financial support and practical training. This group includes individuals vital to the local economy, such as mat weavers, eco-guides, small guesthouse operators, and cultural groups who actively share their heritage with visitors.
Notable aspects of the program encompass a clear grant application process, enhanced connections between improved infrastructure and earning opportunities, and guidance aligned with the Integrated Tourism Master Plan. The program’s framework has been shaped by input from the local communities during consultations in the Northern Division.
DPM Gavoka has encouraged community members to participate actively and prepare their Expressions of Interest before the launch. He highlighted that applications will be open in December, and assured that the selection process will be fair and transparent.
The initiative invites communities and small businesses to propose ideas that showcase their culture, environment, and skills. Additionally, the program will offer training and advisory support to help applicants formulate strong proposals.
This undertaking underscores the importance of prioritizing local communities in tourism development, fostering opportunities for families, and promoting sustainable growth throughout the Northern region. The opening of applications at the December launch events represents a significant opportunity for local operators to advance their initiatives and enhance their operations.
