Celebrations honoring women are underway across the nation this week, leading up to International Women’s Day on March 8. Among these events is the launch of the WICAT (Women in Construction and Trade) Fiji website in Suva, which serves as a proud acknowledgment of women’s contributions in the construction and trade sectors.

At the unveiling, Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, joined industry leaders in inaugurating the new digital platform, marking a pivotal advancement for gender equality within the technical and construction workforce. A $30,000 government grant has been allocated to WICAT, aimed at bolstering networking and training opportunities for women-led enterprises. This funding is expected to empower more women with the skills and confidence required to forge successful careers in areas historically dominated by men.

The launch event was infused with enthusiasm and a collective vision for the future, as participants acknowledged the necessity of enhancing women’s involvement in trades. By dismantling long-standing barriers in the construction industry, these women are not only furthering their own professional journeys but also contributing to the creation of a more robust and inclusive economy in Fiji. This initiative promises to pave the way for future generations of women in technical fields, fostering an environment where they can thrive.
