A new era in recycling is dawning in Fiji as Return and Earn Fiji, a not-for-profit organization, has announced the upcoming nationwide launch of a community-centered, industry-supported beverage container collection system by mid-next year. This initiative aims to unite the recycling efforts of eight major beverage companies, making it easier for Fijians to return PET bottles and aluminum cans for recycling.
Under this program, participants will receive five cents for every container returned, irrespective of the brand. According to spokesperson Dwain Qalovaki, the initiative plans to establish at least 50 buy-back collection points across Fiji, working in collaboration with communities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to streamline the process.
The collected materials will be sent to processing facilities on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu before being transported to certified recyclers abroad. Mr. Qalovaki stated, “The system is designed to reward responsible waste management while providing an accessible and transparent way for the public to recycle.” Regular reports will be published to ensure accountability, detailing the quantities collected and the environmental benefits of the initiative.
The program enjoys the support of prominent members of the beverage industry, including Carpenters (Fiji) Pte Ltd, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (Fiji) Ltd, and Motibhai and Company Ltd. Other beverage distributors are welcome to join in the mission to create a cleaner and greener Fiji.
This ambitious project builds on Fiji’s previous recycling efforts, particularly the work of groups like Mission Pacific, which has been active in promoting recycling since 1999. Mission Pacific has contributed significantly to the recycling landscape by offering cash refunds for containers and creating collection points to increase accessibility for local communities. These combined efforts demonstrate a growing dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability within Fiji.
With these developments, there is hope for enhanced community involvement and the creation of more effective waste management practices across the nation. By fostering cooperation among industry players and local communities, Fiji is not only making strides in recycling but also setting a positive example for sustainability efforts throughout the Pacific region.
