The launch of the first National Sewer Management Compliance Committee marks a significant step forward in addressing pressing sewer and wastewater issues across the country. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, this committee unites essential stakeholders, including municipal councils, the Water Authority of Fiji, and the Ministry of Health, in a collaborative effort to enhance sewer management practices.

Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary, highlighted the initiative’s response to the growing number of public complaints and the environmental hazards associated with poor sewer management. He emphasized the critical importance of taking immediate, coordinated action to ensure both public safety and environmental protection. “Environmental protection begins at the household level. Compliance, responsibility, and respect for infrastructure are essential if we are serious about protecting public health and our environment,” he stated.

Municipal councils actively participated in shaping the committee’s direction, sharing practical challenges that impact the effectiveness of sewer management procedures. The Department of Environment will oversee the committee’s workings, with the Water Authority of Fiji acting as Co-Chair and the Ministry of Health providing secretarial support.

During its inaugural meeting, the committee addressed agency roles, identified long-standing operational challenges, and began developing Standard Operating Procedures aimed at improving enforcement and response efforts. The establishment of this committee is poised to enhance national compliance, protect public health, and maintain the integrity of Fiji’s waterways, demonstrating a proactive commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
