The launch of a new micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) database in Fiji is poised to transform the support landscape for these vital businesses. This centralized and secure national platform aims to gather essential data about MSMEs across various sectors, providing an unprecedented overview of the country’s MSME ecosystem.

The database will allow for detailed insights into various aspects of businesses, including their size, geographical location, employment levels, and the challenges they face. Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel, who officiated the launch, highlighted the previous fragmentation of MSME data across numerous organizations, which included registration bodies, tax authorities, and financial institutions. Such disconnection, he noted, hindered effective planning and collaboration.

The new platform resolves these issues by centralizing MSME information while emphasizing confidentiality and strict data protection measures. Immanuel stated that the MSME Database will significantly improve evidence-based policymaking and budgeting, thus empowering the government to create programs tailored to the actual needs of these businesses.

From January 5th next year, MSMEs that are registered on the database will have the opportunity to apply for five essential grant programs via the MSME Portal at www.msmeportal.gov.fj. These initiatives include the Integrated Human Resource Development Programme, National Export Strategy, Trade Enhancement Programme, Young Entrepreneurship Scheme, and the Northern Development Programme.

The establishment of this database signifies a positive development for Fiji’s economy, especially for its MSMEs, equipping them with vital resources and support necessary to thrive in a competitive environment.
