The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways in Fiji has initiated national consultations regarding the draft National Organic Policy and the accompanying National Organic Action Plan. This policy has been crafted with input from the Fiji Organic Task Force, which includes various government agencies, non-governmental organizations, farmer groups, and private sector partners. The primary goal of the policy is to formalize organic farming practices, enhance market access for organic products, and ensure alignment with regional standards, including the Pacific Organic Standard and POETCom.
Supported by the Australian Government’s Market Development Facility (MDF), the consultation aims to validate the draft policy, collect stakeholder feedback, and foster a sense of national ownership. The Agribusiness Group is assisting in the validation process, ensuring that key groups such as farmers, women, youth, and traditional landowners are central to the decision-making.
The consultation process is designed to finalize the National Organic Policy and Action Plan, strengthen partnerships, create a roadmap for effective implementation, and raise awareness about the contributions of organic agriculture to sustainable development. The policy aligns with broader national objectives outlined in Fiji’s National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, both emphasizing food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural practices.
This initiative represents a significant step toward improving Fiji’s agricultural landscape, emphasizing community engagement and sustainability. It echoes earlier strategies related to the Non-Sugar Agricultural Sector Policy, which focuses on enhancing food security and promoting economic well-being for all Fijians. Through proactive investment and collaborative efforts, there is optimism for a resilient agricultural future that meets the needs of the community and contributes to long-term economic stability.
