Fiji launches major policing push to secure growth

The Fijian government has announced a significant push to enhance public safety by investing heavily in the Fiji Police Force and upgrading policing infrastructure. At the inauguration of the new $36 million Nakasi Police Station, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad emphasized that security is essential for the nation’s progress and economic development.

The government has allocated a total of $240 million to the Police budget and plans to recruit an additional 1,000 officers. This recruitment aims to bolster community policing efforts and address rising crime rates, which have reportedly surged by 26% in recent months. Prasad reiterated the coalition government’s commitment to combating drug abuse, human trafficking, and cybercrime using improved resources, stronger legislation, and international collaborations.

Prasad stated, “Without safety and security, there can be no sustainable development, investment, or improvement in the quality of life for our people.” He further acknowledged the importance of the Fiji Police Force in restoring public trust and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to equipping them with necessary tools and infrastructure to enhance community safety.

The recent budget increase aligns with earlier discussions by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, who described safety and security as vital foundations for national development. Naivalurua previously noted the urgency in addressing the escalating drug crisis, calling it a national emergency that necessitates comprehensive action.

The opening of the Nakasi Police Station not only marks the establishment of a new facility serving over 45,000 residents but also signifies the government’s overarching commitment to modernizing the Fiji Police Force. This investment is expected to directly enhance operational capabilities and improve law enforcement’s visibility across the country.

As Fiji navigates contemporary challenges in crime and security, this strategic investment lays the groundwork for a more collaborative and effective policing approach. The proactivity shown by the government reflects an optimistic trajectory towards creating safer communities and fostering public trust through enhanced law enforcement measures.
