Fiji Launches Festive Road Safety Drive with Increased Enforcement

As the festive season nears, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police are intensifying their efforts to prevent road accidents that are prevalent during holiday periods. Most crashes occur at night, on weekends, and during public holidays, often due to alcohol use, speeding, and neglecting to wear seatbelts.

In response, the LTA and Fiji Police have initiated a joint operation running from October 1 to January 31. This comprehensive plan includes visible patrols, checkpoints in high-risk zones, and public awareness campaigns targeting the busiest travel times to enhance road safety across Fiji.

Authorities highlight that focused enforcement is crucial for reducing accidents that can be avoided, ultimately ensuring the safety of Fijian roads during this period. This initiative aligns with the historically busy festive season, which sees a spike in road traffic due to various holiday activities and family gatherings.

Importantly, there has been a significant decline in road fatalities this year, with 51 reported as of November 11, compared to 71 in the same period last year. This positive trend offers hope that ongoing safety measures are bearing fruit. The proactive approach of LTA and Fiji Police emphasizes the importance of community vigilance and adherence to road rules for all drivers and pedestrians.

Minister of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Filipe Tuisawau, has reiterated the need for strict compliance with traffic laws, conveying his sympathies to those affected by recent accidents. The collaborative effort with Municipal Council enforcement officers through the National Joint Operations Order underscores the commitment to creating safer road environments for everyone in Fiji.

These operations are not just about enforcing laws but about fostering a safer culture of road use. With heightened vigilance and a robust public awareness campaign, the authorities are hopeful that this festive season will be safer, reducing accidents and ensuring that families can enjoy their holidays with peace of mind. The continued decline in fatalities shows that with community cooperation, achieving safer roads is within reach.
