Eseta Nadakuitavuki, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information in Fiji, has emphasized the critical importance of digital media literacy in today’s world, where it has become an essential skill rather than an optional one. During a Digital Media Literacy Training session in Suva, she expressed concern over the pervasive threats of misinformation, cyberbullying, and online scams, which pose substantial risks not only to individuals but also to the stability of the nation.
Nadakuitavuki pointed out that Fiji is ill-prepared for the rapid growth of social media and the accompanying complexities it brings. She described mobile phones as having transformed from simple communication devices to multifunctional tools that serve various roles, including as news sources, marketplaces, classrooms, and public forums.
“It is crucial that digital literacy extends beyond the basic capabilities of posting or commenting online,” said Nadakuitavuki. She urged individuals to become advocates against the misuse of digital platforms, stressing, “These are not just digital problems. They are human problems. They affect real people with families and communities.”
The Permanent Secretary highlighted urgent issues such as the spread of false narratives, the prevalence of fake accounts, the rise of AI-generated content, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, categorizing these challenges as significant human issues that require attention. Women, youth, and marginalized groups are often disproportionately affected by online abuse, underscoring the need for immediate action.
Nadakuitavuki called for a greater emphasis on critical thinking skills, the importance of verifying information before sharing it, and an understanding of the legal responsibilities that accompany digital expression. While acknowledging the significance of freedom of expression, she reiterated that it must be balanced with accountability.
To cultivate a safer digital environment, she urged for coordinated national efforts and encouraged citizens to take ownership of the quality of online interactions in Fiji. By collectively committing to enhancing digital literacy, the nation can foster an atmosphere that not only promotes informed discourse but also protects the well-being of its community members.
