Fiji’s journey into professional football has taken a significant step forward with the announcement of Bula FC, the nation’s first professional football franchise. As Bula FC prepares for its debut in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League scheduled for next year, the club has confirmed its leadership team.
Marc McElrath, the managing director of McDonald’s Fiji, has been appointed chairman of Bula FC, with Anushil Kumar stepping in as the acting chief executive officer. Kumar brings more than eight years of experience with the Fiji Football Association, having worked his way up from media officer to general manager of operations, where he managed logistics and tournament planning.
The board of Bula FC will also include Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel, as the Fiji FA remains the club’s majority stakeholder. The board is enhanced by the presence of businessmen Wella Pillay and Jai Singh. Furthermore, Fiji FA vice-president Naziah Ali Krishna has been named as acting chief commercial officer, recognizing her long-term dedication to promoting football, especially women’s football, in Fiji.
The name “Bula,” which signifies life and togetherness, epitomizes the spirit of Fijian hospitality, in line with the club’s motto: “One Vanua, One Team.” The club’s crest integrates traditional Fijian motifs, including the ibe mat and magimagi rope, symbolizing strength and connectivity among Fiji’s 14 provinces.
Bula FC’s establishment comes at an exciting time for Fijian football as the OFC Pro League not only represents an opportunity for local players to compete at a professional level but also sets the stage for international exposure and growth within the sport. The league will feature teams from across the region, contributing to greater competition and development pathways for players.
The proactive steps being taken to develop Bula FC emphasize a hopeful future for football in Fiji. As the franchise prepares to move into its new office base next week, it stands as a beacon of potential for the sport, inspiring both players and fans alike. With strategic planning and community support, Bula FC aims to play an integral role in elevating Fijian football on regional and international stages.
