Fiji is making strides in professional football with the establishment of Bula FC, the country’s inaugural professional football franchise. Set to debut in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League next year, Bula FC has announced its leadership team, paving the way for an exciting future in the sport.
Leading the initiative, Marc McElrath, managing director of McDonald’s Fiji, has been appointed as the chairman. Anushil Kumar, who boasts over eight years with the Fiji Football Association, will serve as the acting chief executive officer. Kumar’s experience encompasses various roles, culminating in managing logistics and tournament planning as the general manager of operations.
The Bula FC board also includes Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel as the majority stakeholder, along with prominent business figures Wella Pillay and Jai Singh. Furthermore, the board welcomes Fiji FA vice-president Naziah Ali Krishna as acting chief commercial officer, recognizing her commitment to promoting football, particularly women’s football, in the country.
Named “Bula,” a term signifying life and togetherness, the club embodies the essence of Fijian hospitality, capturing the motto: “One Vanua, One Team.” The team crest features traditional Fijian elements, such as the ibe mat and magimagi rope, which symbolize strength and unity across Fiji’s 14 provinces.
The formation of Bula FC coincides with a pivotal moment for Fijian football. The OFC Pro League will offer local players a platform to showcase their talents at a professional level and expand their international presence.
