Telecom Fiji has made a significant advancement in the nation’s digital landscape by officially launching its 5G network. This rollout represents a major shift towards enhanced connectivity, according to Chief Executive Charles Goundar, who emphasized that 5G will deliver faster, smarter, and more secure internet access. The new technology is designed to facilitate the development of smart homes, smart cities, and automation, thereby paving the way for next-generation digital services.
Goundar remarked, “Today, we are not just launching a network. We are launching a vision of a more connected, innovative and resilient Fiji.” The initial phase of the rollout encompasses key areas including Suva, Nausori, Lami, Lautoka, Nadi, Denarau, Navua, Nasori, and Makoi. A second phase is planned to further extend coverage to additional towns and regions.
In addition to the 5G launch, Telecom Fiji is investing in a 72-kilometre fibre project. This initiative aims to enhance bandwidth and minimize interruptions caused by adverse weather conditions, effectively linking the main islands of Fiji.
Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua highlighted that 5G goes beyond simply providing faster internet; it serves as a cornerstone for various sectors including digital education, healthcare, business, innovation, national security, and disaster response. The implementation of this advanced connectivity supports Fiji’s National Digital Strategy, empowering youth, entrepreneurs, and developers to thrive in a more connected environment.
