Fiji is advancing in climate-resilient infrastructure through a $385 million agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) aimed at modernizing its water and wastewater systems. This strategic initiative forms part of Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025–2029 and the Water Sector Strategy 2050, prioritizing climate adaptation, ocean health, and reliable service delivery. Furthermore, it fits within Fiji’s fiscal strategies, even as the nation manages a projected $11.7 billion debt by mid-2026.
The ADB’s Regional Director, Aaron Batten, highlighted the project’s innovative aspects aimed at efficient resource utilization, improving quality of life, and enhancing regional water sector skills. Central to this effort is the creation of a Pacific Regional Water Operators Training Program in Fiji. This initiative will train water operators from various Pacific nations, especially benefitting smaller countries without the capacity for their own programs. This positions Fiji as a key player in regional skill development, mirroring efforts to address water losses due to aging infrastructure.
The initiative illustrates the Fijian government’s commitment to bolstering water access, service delivery, and the overall resilience of infrastructure against climate impacts. It includes crucial upgrades such as the expansion of the Kinoya wastewater treatment plant and modernization of old pipe systems. These efforts support long-term environmental and economic goals.
