Fiji’s collaboration with the Republic of Korea under the Saemaul Undong (SMU) initiative has reached a significant milestone, celebrating five years of impactful work aimed at empowering rural communities through principles of self-reliance, cooperation, and leadership. Launched in 2020, the program has attracted an impressive investment of over FJ$633,804 (approximately US$297,070), benefiting communities such as Mau in Namosi, Silana, and Naimasimasi in Tailevu. This funding has played a pivotal role in enhancing local infrastructure, improving livelihoods, and fostering community leadership.
Looking to the future, the next phase of the initiative is expected to align closely with Fiji’s national development priorities. Emphasizing sustainability, inclusive participation, and long-term resilience, there are plans to integrate the Saemaul Undong model with Fiji’s Self-Help Programme and establish a Saemaul Undong Academy as a regional training center. Furthermore, a newly proposed Memorandum of Understanding with Korea’s Ministry of Interior and Safety aims to bolster bilateral cooperation even further.
During a recent Parliament session, Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted these developments and expressed gratitude for Korea’s steadfast partnership and shared vision in cultivating inclusive and self-sustaining rural communities.
This collaboration exemplifies a commitment to advancing community development in Fiji while strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two nations, which will celebrate their 55th anniversary in 2026. The partnership underscores a mutual belief in promoting sustainable development, essential in facing challenges such as climate change and economic fluctuations.
