Fiji-Korea Saemaul Undong Marks Five Years, Plans Bold Rural Development Ahead

Fiji’s collaboration with the Republic of Korea under the Saemaul Undong (SMU) initiative has marked a significant milestone, celebrating five impactful years dedicated to empowering rural communities with principles of self-reliance, cooperation, and leadership. Since its inception in 2020, the program has seen an investment exceeding FJ$633,804 (around US$297,070) into communities such as Mau in Namosi, Silana, and Naimasimasi in Tailevu. This funding has been crucial in enhancing local infrastructure, bolstering livelihoods, and cultivating community leadership.

Looking ahead, the next phase of this initiative is anticipated to align with Fiji’s national development priorities, emphasizing sustainability, inclusive participation, and long-term resilience. Plans are underway to integrate the Saemaul Undong model with Fiji’s Self-Help Programme and establish a Saemaul Undong Academy as a regional training center. Additionally, a new Memorandum of Understanding with Korea’s Ministry of Interior and Safety is set to amplify bilateral cooperation.

Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, shared these developments in Parliament, acknowledging Korea’s enduring partnership and mutual vision in fostering inclusive and self-sustaining rural communities.

This collaboration not only reflects a commitment to community development in Fiji but also strengthens the ties between the two nations as they prepare to celebrate the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026. The partnership underscores a shared belief in fostering sustainable development, which is increasingly crucial as countries aim to navigate the challenges posed by climate change and economic fluctuations.

As Fiji continues to enhance its infrastructure and community initiatives, the ongoing support from Korea through projects like the Saemaul Undong initiative illustrates a hopeful trajectory for the nation’s future, reinforcing the importance of international partnerships in driving local progress.
