The Fiji Kids Learning for Life program proudly marks its 16th anniversary, committed to aiding underprivileged students in the Nadroga region throughout their academic careers. Founded by Julie Hoskisen, the initiative currently supports over 80 families by covering their educational expenses through a progressive sponsorship model that spans from Class One to Year 13.
Hoskisen emphasized the program’s longitudinal approach, stating, “We’re called Learning for Life, Future Kids Learning for Life, and that means if a child joins us in Class One, we’re still sponsoring them in Year 13.” This commitment ensures that children are encouraged to stay in school and pursue their aspirations.
Since its inception, the program has positively influenced the lives of more than 250 children, many of whom have furthered their education at noteworthy institutions such as Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific, as well as various vocational training centers aimed at equipping them with vital skills for employment. A cornerstone of the program’s success is its focus on empowering graduates to become community leaders.
Currently, the initiative is supported by approximately 30 active mentors and 40 graduates who are participating in scholarship programs for vocational training and university education. Hoskisen noted that many of these graduates return to the program to inspire younger students, reinforcing the cycle of support within the community. “We encourage them to reflect on how they’ve been helped and how they can motivate younger ones to attend school and improve their lives,” she highlighted.
The ultimate goal of the Fiji Kids Learning for Life program is to empower community members, providing both inspiration and the financial support necessary to break the cycle of poverty. By nurturing a culture of achievement and mentorship, the program aims to inspire future generations to dream bigger and work diligently toward a brighter future.
