Fiji Launches National Consultations on Organic Policy to Boost Sustainable Farming

Fiji Kicks Off Nationwide Consultations for Organic Policy and Action Plan

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways in Fiji has launched national consultations aimed at developing the draft National Organic Policy along with the National Organic Action Plan. This policy, supported by the inputs from the Fiji Organic Task Force—which includes representatives from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, farmer groups, and private sector stakeholders—aims to formalize organic farming practices, improve market access for organic products, and ensure compliance with regional standards such as the Pacific Organic Standard and POETCom guidelines.

With assistance from the Australian Government’s Market Development Facility (MDF), these consultations are designed to validate the draft policy, gather feedback from stakeholders, and create a sense of ownership among the populace. The Agribusiness Group is playing a crucial role in this validation process, prioritizing the involvement of important demographic groups including farmers, women, youth, and traditional landowners in the decision-making framework.

This comprehensive consultation approach seeks to finalize the National Organic Policy and Action Plan, enhance partnerships, develop a clear implementation roadmap, and raise awareness about the vital role of organic agriculture in achieving sustainable development. The initiative is in alignment with broader national goals outlined in Fiji’s National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and the Vision 2050 strategy, both of which prioritize food security, climate resilience, and sustainable farming practices.

This effort marks a pivotal moment for the enhancement of Fiji’s agricultural sector, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and sustainability. It reflects earlier policies focused on the Non-Sugar Agricultural Sector, which aim to bolster food security and promote the economic well-being of all Fijians. Through strategic investment and collaborative efforts, there is a hopeful outlook for a resilient agricultural future that addresses community needs while contributing to long-term economic prosperity.
