Fiji’s Customs is launching an ambitious modernization program designed to adapt to the changing landscape of global trade and movement. Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel underscored that this transformation hinges on intelligence-led and technology-driven approaches, ensuring that border agencies enhance their efficiency in combating smuggling and illicit activities.

Among the key initiatives underway is the establishment of a container examination facility. This facility aims to improve non-intrusive inspection capabilities, enabling customs officials to better identify potential risks. Additionally, the introduction of a National Single Window system is set to simplify trading processes and enhance compliance. The procurement of advanced surveillance and monitoring technologies further aims to strengthen risk detection efforts.

Speaking at the International Customs Day celebration in Suva, Minister Immanuel pointed out the development of a coastal maritime strategy and the formation of enhanced governance committees. These measures are designed to promote better coordination among various stakeholders involved in border enforcement. He remarked, “Together, these reforms position Customs not only as a regulator of borders, but as a modern, intelligence-driven institution capable of protecting society while enabling legitimate trade and economic growth.”

The Minister acknowledged the often-overlooked but critical contributions of customs officers in ensuring community safety, border security, and a strong economy. He commended their dedication to ensuring the smooth flow of legitimate trade while addressing potential threats effectively.

In his address, Immanuel emphasized the importance of vigilance against emerging risks, urging his team to continue their work with purpose, integrity, and professionalism. “Customs will continue to protect society through our leadership, resilience, and service to the nation,” he affirmed.

To commemorate International Customs Day, 20 customs officers and external partners were awarded the prestigious World Customs Organization (WCO) Certificate of Merit. This recognition reflects the highest standards of customs service, showcasing the officers’ commitment to vigilance, integrity, and professionalism in safeguarding the community. Such acknowledgments highlight the essential role of customs in not only maintaining safety but also facilitating legitimate economic activity, reinforcing a hopeful outlook for the future of global engagement in Fiji.
