The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force have launched a comprehensive road safety campaign targeting the busy 2025–2026 festive season. Officially initiated at a signing ceremony in Valelevu by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe and LTA Chief Operating Officer Imran Ali, the operation aims to significantly reduce road accidents and traffic offences during this high-traffic period. Running from October 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026, the campaign is crucial as it coincides with a time historically marked by increased road usage due to holiday festivities.
LTA’s Imran Ali emphasized that the initiative would focus on tackling risky driving behaviors such as speeding, overloading of vehicles, and alcohol impairment. These activities are traditionally heightened during the festive season, thus increasing risks on the roads. He reiterated the importance of closing enforcement gaps which often allow drivers to escape penalties due to jurisdictional differences between the LTA and police.
Assistant Commissioner Vusonilawe underscored the shared responsibility of road safety, appealing to all road users, including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, to exercise more vigilance. His call to action highlighted the essential role of public cooperation in ensuring the success of any enforcement measures.
In light of past enforcement operations, this campaign is particularly strategic, adopting data-driven approaches to target high-risk areas and behaviors. This new operation builds on previous collaborative efforts between the Fiji Police and LTA, which have shown a promising decline in road fatalities. Last year’s efforts had already yielded a reduction in fatalities from 71 to 51 during the festive season, thanks to similar initiatives.
As the festive season approaches, the deployment of additional patrols, checkpoints, and awareness campaigns reflect the authorities’ proactive stance. The focus is not only on enforcement but also on raising public awareness and urging community involvement to cultivate a culture of responsibility and safety on the roads.
This renewed commitment by the LTA and Fiji Police in anticipating the challenges of the coming festive season is a promising step towards fostering safer roads across the nation, ensuring that the festivities do not turn into tragedy for any family.
