The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force have jointly launched a thorough road safety initiative to address the expected spike in road activity during the 2025-2026 festive season. The campaign, officially commenced at a signing event in Valelevu by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe and LTA Chief Operating Officer Imran Ali, is set to run from October 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026. Its primary goal is to substantially lower road accidents and traffic violations during this traditionally high-traffic period.
Imran Ali from the LTA highlighted that the campaign will address hazardous driving behaviors such as speeding, vehicle overloading, and alcohol impairment, which are typically exacerbated during festive times. By addressing these issues, the initiative aims to fill enforcement gaps that sometimes allow drivers to evade penalties due to jurisdictional overlaps between the LTA and the police.
Kasiano Vusonilawe emphasized the collective responsibility of road safety, urging all road users, including drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, to remain vigilant. He stressed that public cooperation is vital to the success of enforcement measures.
This campaign takes a strategic, data-driven approach to identify and target high-risk areas and behaviors, building on past collaborative efforts between the Fiji Police and LTA. Previous initiatives have successfully reduced road fatalities, with last year seeing a decline from 71 to 51 during the festive season.
As the holiday season nears, the introduction of additional patrols, checkpoints, and awareness campaigns illustrates the authorities’ proactive efforts. Beyond enforcement, the initiative focuses on raising public awareness and encouraging community participation to foster a culture of responsibility and safety on the roads.
This renewed pledge by the LTA and Fiji Police to tackle the challenges of the upcoming festive season is a commendable step towards creating safer roads nationwide, ensuring celebrations remain joyous and do not lead to family tragedies.
