The Suva Tennis Association has achieved a significant milestone with the conclusion of a 10-day training tour at the prestigious Yoshida Tennis Training Centre in Japan. This initiative marks an important step in the association’s ongoing mission to nurture and develop young tennis talent from Fiji, providing them with an opportunity to engage in high-level coaching and cultural enrichment.
During their visit to Japan, the junior players from Fiji were exposed to an elite training environment that emphasized technical skills, while also focusing on the holistic development of the players. In addition to receiving rigorous on-court training, the athletes participated in cultural activities like calligraphy, tea ceremonies, taiko drumming, and dance. These activities were thoughtfully integrated into the program to enhance essential qualities such as discipline and focus, critical for success in the sport of tennis.
Sumit Lal, the Head Coach who accompanied the team, described the program as transformative. He praised the structured and disciplined approach of Japanese players, which left a lasting impression on the young Fijian athletes. Training alongside their Japanese peers provided the Fijian juniors with invaluable insights and motivation to elevate their own standards.
From the perspective of the team manager and parent representative, Saroj Izumi, the trip was profoundly impactful. The players returned home with a renewed sense of ambition and a clearer vision for their future in tennis.
