Fiji-Japan Ties Deepen as Rabuka Heads to Japan; Acting PM Takes Charge

Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, will take on the duties of Acting Prime Minister while Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is on an official visit to Japan this week. This trip, invited by the Government of Japan, aims to reinforce Fiji’s enduring partnership with Japan, built on shared principles of democracy, peace, and sustainable development.

During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka is slated to engage in various official activities, including a bilateral meeting with Japan’s newly elected and first female Prime Minister, Ms. Takaichi Sanae. The leaders will sign the Lomavata–Kizuna Partnership joint communique, which outlines a framework for enhanced cooperation in key areas such as climate resilience, economic growth, technology, and people-to-people ties.

Rabuka’s scheduled return to Fiji is on November 16, 2025, after which he will resume his duties. Until then, Mr. Vosarogo will ensure the smooth operation of government affairs.

This week highlights Fiji’s commitment to strengthening its international relationships, particularly with Japan, and continues a long history of diplomatic engagement that has seen cooperation in various sectors, including education, health, and disaster management. The visit is seen as a significant step toward fostering a resilient Pacific region, paving the way for more collaborative efforts in facing global challenges.
