Fiji-Japan Deepens Ties Ahead of Expo 2025 Osaka with Green Tech and Digital Focus

Fiji’s evolving partnership with Japan has made significant strides following a successful trade and investment mission, as well as Fiji’s participation in the Expo 2025 set to take place in Osaka. This mission, part of the Fijian government’s broader economic diplomacy agenda, aims to broaden market access, attract quality investments, and reinforce development partnerships between the nations.

The Fijian delegation, under the guidance of Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development Esrom Immanuel, engaged actively with stakeholders in Japan to pinpoint opportunities that align with Japan’s innovation-focused economy. Immanuel expressed optimism about incorporating lessons learned to modernize Fiji’s cooperative movement, striving for inclusivity and enhanced productivity.

Japan has reiterated its commitment to supporting Fiji’s sustainable development objectives, with concentrated efforts identified in sectors such as renewable energy, climate resilience, digital connectivity, and agriculture modernization. Next month, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will lead a government delegation to sign the pivotal Japan-Fiji-lomavata Partnership Agreement, further solidifying these collaborative efforts.

Independent Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya praised the Trade Ministry’s initiative to expand Fiji’s opportunities within the Asian market, highlighting Japan’s longstanding role in Fiji’s development since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970. Japan has provided $1.6 billion in development aid, underscoring the strength of this bilateral relationship.

Japanese investors have shown a growing interest in Fiji’s aviation infrastructure. This reflects a renewed commercial confidence in Fiji, aided by the backing of several new businesses and foreign investments. The focus of these investments has shifted towards enhancing human resources through knowledge transfer and supporting startups in the green technology sector, particularly hydrogen energy—a crucial area for future growth given the urgent environmental challenges we face.

Fiji’s proactive engagement with Japan is further demonstrated by its commitment to strengthening digital security infrastructure, as recently discussed at bilateral meetings focused on cyber resilience and ICT development. With proposals to develop cooperation on various ICT projects, Fiji is focused on advancing its technological landscape for national benefit.

As Fiji prepares to showcase its cultural heritage, economic potential, and advancements in various sectors at Expo 2025, there is a renewed sense of hope and anticipation for future collaborations.
