Fiji has taken a significant step in advancing its cybersecurity capabilities by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel, a nation recognized for its expertise in cyber technology. The agreement was formalized during the visit of Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sharren Haskel, and was observed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who described the signing as a pivotal move in bolstering Fiji’s digital infrastructure.
This collaborative effort stems from increasing concerns over cybersecurity vulnerabilities faced by Fiji. Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that the agreement was a product of concerted efforts across multiple ministries, including Communications, Home Affairs, and Defence, illustrating a united front towards strengthening national security in the digital realm.
Rabuka expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “This is the first multi-ministerial Cabinet decision that showcases our commitment to advancing our cybersecurity landscape.” He highlighted that the agreement with Israel represents not just a technical alliance but a deepening of bilateral cooperation in various crucial sectors.
Deputy Foreign Minister Haskel commended Fiji for its steadfast support of Israel, especially during challenging times. She recognized Fiji’s decision to open its embassy in Jerusalem, reinforcing the affirmation of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Haskel expressed gratitude for Fiji standing by Israel, as she stated, “You have stood beside us with clarity and courage.”
During her visit, Haskel led a delegation of Israeli business leaders exploring potential cooperation in sectors including agriculture, water, healthcare, education, and women’s empowerment—fields where Fiji stands to gain significantly from such partnerships. She noted that this relationship is founded on mutual respect and shared values, aiming to build bridges between the peoples of both nations.
