President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has honored the memory of fallen United Nations peacekeepers during his first State Visit to Ireland, which included a visit to the United Nations Military Academy at Curragh in Kildare. Accompanied by First Lady Emily Lalabalavu, the President received an eight-man Guard of Honour before taking part in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony dedicated to those who have lost their lives while serving in UN missions.
In his address, President Lalabalavu underscored the strong military ties between Fiji and Ireland, highlighting their collaborative efforts in international peacekeeping missions across the Middle East and beyond. He expressed, “Fiji and Ireland have a long history of peacekeeping which reflects our shared commitment to global peace and stability. Fiji values this partnership and looks forward to strengthening cooperation in defence training and peace operations.”
During the visit, the Irish Defence Forces provided the President with updates on current operations in the Middle East, where Fijian troops serve alongside Irish personnel. The United Nations Military Academy is crucial in training for these missions, helping to equip military forces with the leadership and operational skills needed for success.
