Concerns have emerged from the Social Empowerment and Education Programme (SEEP) and Human Rights Commissioner Chantelle Khan following recent disparaging remarks made by a police officer and a pastor, who labeled Hindu and Muslim festivals as “demonic activities.” These comments have ignited considerable backlash, prompting calls for unity and respect among the various religious communities in Fiji.
Commissioner Khan emphasized that such statements contradict the values of peace and cohesion that are fundamental to Fijian society. She reiterated that the law applies equally to everyone, and underscored the necessity of upholding human rights and equality. While Fiji’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and prohibits discrimination, Khan stated that any form of hate speech against religious groups jeopardizes the dignity and safety of individuals across the nation.
In light of these events, the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) underscored the importance of exercising religious freedom in a responsible manner. They condemned inflammatory remarks from religious figures, asserting that such hate speech undermines the principles of respect and harmony which are crucial for coexistence in Fiji’s multicultural society.
Community leaders, including Opposition Member of Parliament Vijay Nath, have classified the remarks as “unethical and disgraceful,” calling for solidarity against intolerance and a reaffirmation of Fiji’s cultural diversity, where pluralism has thrived for generations.
The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha has joined in condemning the derogatory comments, demanding a thorough investigation into the police officer’s statements. Leaders from the Fiji Muslim League and Arya Pratinidhi Sabha have also banded together to denounce hate speech, emphasizing that mutual respect is essential for maintaining social cohesion.
