Fiji Interfaith Tensions After Police Officer’s Demonic Festival Remarks

The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji (SSDPSF) has filed a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), urging an investigation into a police officer accused of making derogatory remarks regarding Hindu and Muslim religious practices. The complaint stems from a video that surfaced on social media, in which the officer, who is also a pastor, is seen preaching that participating in major religious festivals such as Diwali, Ram Naumi, Navratri, and Eid equates to engaging in “demonic activities.”

In an official statement, the SSDPSF expressed that such comments are “deeply disrespectful, divisive, and contrary to Fiji’s foundational values of racial and religious harmony.” The Sabha emphasized its concerns about the potential erosion of public confidence in the impartiality of the Fiji Police Force due to the comments of a serving officer.

“The Police Force promotes racial unity and interfaith cooperation as part of its community policing programs,” they noted, indicating the negative impact that such divisive rhetoric can have on the integrity of law enforcement. The Sabha is calling upon all faith leaders and community representatives to reject hate speech and uphold Fiji’s long-standing tradition of interfaith harmony and national unity, reinforcing the idea that places of worship should uplift humanity rather than create divisions.

Moreover, this incident plays into a larger narrative of religious tensions and recent sacrilege incidents affecting various faith communities in Fiji. Similar events have occurred, such as vandalism at the Samabula Shiv Mandir and the desecration of sacred texts, which have drawn widespread condemnation from interfaith leaders and the general public. Community leaders have been vocal about the need for unity and respect among diverse religious groups, viewing these distressing acts as opportunities to foster meaningful dialogue and enhance understanding.

Despite recent challenges, leaders remain hopeful that these incidents can spur collective action for greater interfaith cooperation, leading to a stronger and more harmonious society in Fiji. As the SSDPSF continues to advocate for respect and understanding within the community, there is optimism that such efforts will contribute to a bright future where all citizens can freely practice their faith in a climate of dignity and mutual respect.
