Fiji investigates police officer after anti-faith remarks spark controversy

Fiji Interfaith Tension as Police Officer in Controversial Video Faces Scrutiny

The Shree Sanatan Dharm Purohit Brahman Maha Sabha Fiji has voiced strong disapproval regarding a controversial social media video that features a local pastor and a police officer making inflammatory comments about individuals of various faiths. The video has ignited considerable debate after the pastor urged Christians to abstain from participating in cultural and national celebrations such as Diwali, Eid, Navratri, Holi, and Ram Navmi, labeling these festivities as demon worship.

The Maha Sabha criticized these remarks as not only disrespectful but also detrimental to Fiji’s diverse and multicultural society. They highlighted that such statements are in direct conflict with the national ideals of peace, unity, and mutual respect, which are crucial for the harmonious coexistence of diverse communities.

The situation is particularly alarming given that the person making these statements is affiliated with the police force. The organization emphasized that police officers should maintain impartiality and respect for all faiths, a responsibility essential for nurturing trust within the community.

In light of these troubling remarks, the Maha Sabha has formally submitted a complaint to the relevant government ministries and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), urging swift disciplinary and legal measures against the involved officer under the Civil Service Code of Conduct.

The organization also stressed the necessity to uphold calm and unity among the populace, reiterating that divisive and hateful rhetoric has no place in Fiji. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed receipt of the formal complaint and stated that an investigation is currently underway, with the CID leading the inquiry and the Internal Affairs reviewing the officer’s conduct internally.

This incident reflects earlier concerns raised by the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha in Fiji, which experienced similar outrage when remarks from another police officer undermined the nation’s foundational values of racial and religious harmony. These recurring issues underscore the urgent need for a community dialogue focused on tolerance and mutual respect among various faiths, a sentiment echoed by different community and religious leaders.

As Fiji faces the challenges of religious intolerance, the collective response from diverse leaders provides a hopeful outlook for the future. By championing interfaith dialogue and reinforcing shared values, there is a strong aspiration to enhance social cohesion and build a society that honors and respects all beliefs.
