The Fiji Muslim League (FML) has firmly condemned derogatory statements captured in videos circulating on social media, which have caused distress in both the Muslim and Hindu communities. In a public statement, FML National President Basheer Ahmed articulated the organization’s support for calls urging authorities to address the individual’s offensive remarks.
Mr. Ahmed emphasized that such comments are intolerable in a nation that prides itself on unity, mutual respect, and harmony among diverse faiths. He referenced the teachings of the Holy Qur’an, highlighting the significance of showing respect for all religions, underscoring that respect is essential for fostering peace, while insults breed division. “The Fiji Muslim League stands firm in denouncing any act that disrespects another religion or faith,” he remarked.
The FML president appealed to community leaders and citizens to champion love, tolerance, and respect, values that are foundational across all faiths. He encouraged a collective effort toward building a Fiji where every community is valued and individuals are guided by principles of respect and peace. The League reaffirmed its commitment to fostering interfaith harmony and national unity, asserting that these ideals are crucial for maintaining peace and cohesion within Fiji’s multicultural framework.
This situation arises amid growing apprehensions regarding religious intolerance in Fiji, a sentiment shared by various community leaders. Recently, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji has expressed solidarity with complaints addressing offensive remarks aimed at both Hindu and Muslim practices. This organization, along with other interfaith groups, has condemned actions that jeopardize the principles of equality, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence that define Fijian society.
Despite the challenges posed by incidents of intolerance, there remains an optimistic outlook for a future characterized by dialogue and understanding among Fiji’s diverse religious communities. Leaders continue to promote engagement in discussions centered around mutual respect, hoping to cultivate a spirit of cohesion that will endure amidst current challenges. The collective resolve to maintain a culture of tolerance and respect is perceived as a guiding light leading Fiji toward a more unified and harmonious future.
