The Fiji Muslim League (FML) has issued a strong condemnation of derogatory remarks made by an individual in videos circulating on social media, emphasizing the pain these comments have caused to both the Muslim and Hindu communities. In a statement, FML National President Basheer Ahmed expressed the organization’s solidarity with calls for the authorities to take appropriate action against the individual responsible for the offensive remarks.
Mr. Ahmed stated, “Such remarks are unacceptable and have no place in a nation founded on unity, mutual respect, and harmony among all faiths.” He highlighted that the Holy Qur’an emphasizes the importance of respect towards all religions, asserting that respect fosters peace, while insults lead to division and disharmony. “The Fiji Muslim League stands resolute in denouncing any act that disrespects another religion or faith,” he added.
The FML president urged community leaders and citizens to uphold love, tolerance, and respect—values central to all faiths. He called upon everyone to work towards building a Fiji where every community is valued and every individual is guided by respect and peace. The FML reaffirmed its commitment to promoting interfaith harmony and national unity, stating that these principles are vital for maintaining peace and cohesion in Fiji’s multicultural society.
This incident comes against a backdrop of rising concerns over religious intolerance in Fiji, which has been echoing in other recent comments from community leaders. For instance, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji has previously expressed strong support for complaints filed regarding offensive remarks targeted at both Hindu and Muslim practices. They, along with other interfaith groups, have condemned actions that threaten the foundational principles of equality, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence inherent in Fijian society.
Despite the challenges posed by such incidents, there remains hope for a future defined by dialogue and understanding among Fiji’s diverse religious communities. Leaders advocate for continued engagement in discussions centered on mutual respect, aiming to cultivate a spirit of cohesion that can withstand the current challenges facing the nation. In light of these events, the collective determination to uphold tolerance and respect is seen as a beacon guiding Fiji toward a more united and harmonious future.
