The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) recently intercepted a foreign-flagged yacht at Savusavu Port, following a risk-based assessment that raised multiple concerns prior to its arrival. After being notified of the yacht’s docking, FRCS officers conducted a targeted inspection, which uncovered two semi-automatic pistols, 30 CO₂ cartridges, and 1,138 pellets. The skipper had not declared any of these items, raising serious compliance issues under Fiji’s Arms and Ammunition Act. This act mandatorily requires valid permits and the declaration of any firearms upon entry into Fijian waters.
The case has been referred to the Fiji Police Force for further investigation. In the wake of this interception, FRCS issued a statement urging travelers, particularly yacht owners and sailors, to provide accurate and complete declarations of their cargo when submitting arrival information. The agency emphasized that failure to comply with these regulations would result in enforcement actions as per the law.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges that Fijian authorities encounter in ensuring maritime security, particularly with regard to illegal arms and drug trafficking linked to yacht movements. Previous operations have also led to the seizure of firearms and ammunition from vessels, some associated with prominent families in Fiji, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance.
