Fiji Inmates Set to Help Fill Cane-Cutting Labor Gap

The Command Group of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), led by Acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, has engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Sugar, represented by Director Praneel Naidu, to investigate new opportunities for inmate involvement in cane-cutting operations within the sugar industry. This collaboration aims to address the current labor shortages faced by farmers, while also allowing inmates a chance to contribute positively to the community.

During the meeting, key topics of discussion included enhancing existing operations, ensuring equitable selection of farms for inmate engagement, and broadening participation throughout the entire farming cycle. Naucukidi expressed gratitude towards the Ministry for its ongoing partnership and conveyed the FCS’s readiness to adapt its operational framework to facilitate greater inmate participation in the Musu Dovu cane-cutting initiative.

Naidu endorsed the idea of utilizing inmates as a solution to the labor gap, noting that they have proven to be an effective workforce without any complaints from farmers. He stated that the demand for inmate workers has only increased, highlighting their importance in the agricultural sector.

Naucukidi shared the positive ramifications of this initiative, emphasizing that not only does it benefit the sugar industry, but it also aids in the rehabilitation of inmates. Participation in such work promotes behavioral improvement and serves as an incentive for inmates to remain compliant. He underscored the valuable skills of hard work, discipline, and teamwork that inmates would gain, necessary for their successful reintegration into society after imprisonment.

The FCS leadership concluded their visit to the Western Division with stops to engage with both inmates and personnel in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, reinforcing their commitment to rehabilitation through constructive community involvement. This initiative stands as a hopeful example of how corrections services can play a role in addressing societal needs while fostering personal development among inmates.
