Salesi Biu Baleikivuya, a 35-year-old inmate, attributes his transformative journey to the rehabilitation programs offered by the Fiji Corrections Service. As he approaches the final year of his 14-year sentence, Baleikivuya has been actively involved in the Corrections Business Unit’s joinery program, which has significantly influenced his personal and professional development.
Originally from Bua, Baleikivuya spent his formative years in various informal settlements in Suva, including Raiwaqa, Raiwai, and Jittu Estate. Reflecting on his past, he acknowledges that the environment he grew up in and the company he kept played pivotal roles in the decisions that ultimately led to his incarceration. However, he is now focused on rebuilding his life and looks forward to a new beginning.
While working in the joinery unit of the Fiji Corrections Service, Baleikivuya earns four dollars a day, which he sees as an opportunity for both skill enhancement and personal growth. He believes that every experience serves a purpose, stating, “The lessons that come with it have helped shape who I am today. Being here has moulded me personally.” Before his time in prison, he had some experience in joinery, but he credits the program with refining his skills and preparing him for future opportunities.
With aspirations to return to Bua post-release and establish his own joinery business, Baleikivuya is also passionate about sharing his story with the youth. He aims to encourage young people to make wiser choices and avoid the pitfalls that led him down a troubled path.
Baleikivuya’s journey highlights the profound impact of rehabilitation and determination. His optimistic outlook for the future and his commitment to guiding the younger generation demonstrate the potential for positive transformation, even in the face of adversity.
