Throughout October, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel Suva, and Holiday Inn Suva united in a powerful effort for Pinktober, raising vital awareness and funds in support of breast cancer care. This year’s campaign, in partnership with the Fiji Cancer Society, saw a remarkable turnout with various fundraising activities, including the popular ‘Cup of Kindness’ coffee sales, a five-kilometer “Pink Walk” through Albert Park in Suva, and donations from food and beverage sales as well as spa treatments.
The hotels collectively generated an impressive $20,000, which will be donated to the Fiji Cancer Society to enhance early detection initiatives, patient support services, and community education on breast cancer. Lachlan Walker, IHG Hotels & Resorts regional general manager Fiji and Pacific, highlighted the significance of Pinktober on their calendar, stating that the initiative deeply resonates with families across Fiji.
A standout feature of this year’s campaign was the stunning lighting of the Grand Pacific Hotel in pink, continuing a cherished tradition in Suva’s Pinktober celebrations. Walker articulated, “The lighting of the hotel’s façade serves as a powerful visual reminder of solidarity, hope, and the importance of awareness.”
In addition to fundraising efforts, the hotels actively promoted health and well-being among their staff. On-site medical checks were available for all employees, encouraging both men and women to stay proactive about their health. Inclusive medical insurance coverage ensures that female staff members have access to crucial screenings and treatment. Health screenings conducted during Pinktober were part of a broader emphasis on promoting early detection and healthy living within the workplace.
Belinda Chan, the Fiji Cancer Society’s chief executive officer, praised the ongoing collaboration with the FNPF-owned hotels. She recognized their commitment not just to fundraising, but also to providing education, screening, and care within the community.
This initiative demonstrates how the hospitality industry can significantly contribute to social causes, fostering a supportive environment and empowering communities to come together for collective well-being. The success of the Pinktober campaign stands as a testament to the positive impact that compassion and involvement in charitable initiatives can generate, creating a stronger network of support for those affected by cancer in Fiji.
