Over the last decade, the Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva has successfully redirected around 32 tonnes of recyclables from the Naboro landfill, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainable waste management. This achievement has garnered recognition from Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd (WRFL), which collaborated with the hotel chain to ensure effective recycling practices.
Amitesh Deo, founder of WRFL and the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), emphasized the hotel’s leadership in environmental responsibility. He praised Tanoa Plaza Hotel for effectively segregating recyclables and managing them appropriately, thereby setting a notable example for other tourist properties in Fiji and the Pacific region. “Tanoa Plaza Hotel has shown that even urban hotels can make a significant difference in waste management and environmental sustainability,” Mr. Deo remarked.
The hotel has adopted additional practical initiatives that reflect a genuine concern for the environment. It has implemented a garden-to-table approach, utilizing its limited garden space to cultivate fresh produce for its menus, promoting healthier and more sustainable dining options. Furthermore, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has taken steps to minimize single-use plastics by replacing disposable water bottles in guest rooms with water dispensers placed conveniently on each floor. This initiative not only offers convenience to guests but also contributes to significant waste reduction efforts.
The Tanoa Group has established an effective waste sorting program that includes visible recycling bins located in guest areas, conference spaces, and staff zones. According to Mr. Deo, this consistent practice not only ensures proper recycling but also raises environmental awareness among both guests and staff, resulting in a ripple effect that encourages sustainable behaviors beyond the hotel premises.
Beyond its collaboration with WRFL, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has worked with PRF on multiple occasions to bolster recycling initiatives and support individuals who are essential to Fiji’s recycling system—known as Collection Pillars of Recycling. Mr. Deo highlighted that these partnerships demonstrate the hotel’s commitment to contributing to the broader recycling ecosystem within the country.
General Manager Mere Rakoroi expressed delight at the partnership with PRF and WRFL and appreciated their guidance in achieving sustainable waste management. “This journey begins with the Reddy Foundation, through which Tanoa Hotels channels its environmental and community responsibilities, ensuring that sustainability commitments translate into meaningful, measurable action,” Ms. Rakoroi said.
The proactive measures taken by Tanoa Plaza Hotel not only reflect its dedication to environmental stewardship but also serve as an inspiration for other businesses and communities to engage in sustainable practices.
