World Maritime Day was recently marked by celebrations with the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation and Our Opportunity,” underscoring the oceans’ vital contributions to sustaining life on Earth. Held at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies in Laucala Bay, Suva, the event focused on addressing the pressing challenges facing our oceans, such as plastic pollution, climate change-induced temperature rises, acidification, and overfishing.
Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), emphasized the detrimental impact human activities have had on ocean health, while also conveying that it is possible to reverse this trend through concerted efforts. Dominguez called for international collaboration aimed at reducing pollution, protecting marine biodiversity, and promoting sustainable maritime practices. This highlights both the responsibility and the opportunity the oceans represent, as safeguarding them not only involves environmental stewardship but also offers avenues for economic growth and a safer future.
The event featured high-level participation, including that of Naisa Tuinaceva, the Assistant Minister for Public Works and Meteorological Services, who served as the chief guest. Tuinaceva highlighted Fiji’s dependence on its marine environment, stating that 98% of the nation is comprised of ocean and 75% of its population relies on it for their livelihood. He reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to marine protection, prompted by experiences like domestic oil spills, by engaging in international treaties and fostering regional cooperation.
During the festivities, various presentations were delivered, including those by the Blue Prosperity Fiji team and initiatives such as the Adopt a Ship Program and Trashboom. These efforts provided maritime students and stakeholders good opportunities to interact with diverse organizations and gain insights into the maritime sector.
This celebration aligns with global efforts to enhance maritime safety and environmentalism, echoing themes from related World Maritime Day events that focus on innovation and safety in the shipping industry. These gatherings reinforce the significance of shipping and maritime activities in global trade, economic resilience, and ecological conservation.
Through shared commitments and responsible maritime practices, the community aims to preserve the integral role oceans play, supporting a healthier planet and a sustainable future for generations to come.
