The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has announced that a collaborative effort with the Fiji Police Force is underway to conduct random sweeps in key urban areas. This initiative aims to tackle the increasing presence of beggars and children selling or living on the streets, particularly during the festive season.
The operations, which commenced two weeks ago, are set to extend throughout the holidays. In a compassionate response to families found begging with children, the Ministry has provided food rations and ensured that these families are safely returned to their homes. Additionally, a senior citizen discovered living on the streets has been offered shelter and care at the Golden Age Home.
The Ministry has issued a reminder to parents and guardians about their responsibility to keep children safe and supervised, especially during school breaks. Children who are found unaccompanied in public spaces will be taken to secure locations, where parents or guardians will receive guidance regarding their duty of care.
In its statement, the government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and supporting vulnerable members of the community to ensure a safe and joyful festive period. The Ministry has called on the public to unite in safeguarding children, the elderly, and women and girls, emphasizing the importance of community care and responsibility during this time.
