The High Court of Fiji has opted to discharge a 19-year-old man without recording a conviction after he pleaded guilty to charges related to causing grievous harm. The young man admitted to unlawfully wounding another individual on October 4, 2025, at River Road, Narere in Nasinu, by repeatedly punching him in the face and mouth.

The court was informed that the altercation took place around 4 a.m. when the complainant met the accused and another individual while on his way home. After sharing drinks with them, the accused allegedly turned aggressive and began to physically assault the complainant. The victim ultimately managed to escape to a nearby residence where he called the police.

During a subsequent police interview, the accused cited his consumption of alcohol and alleged that the complainant had sexually assaulted him while he was unconscious. The court considered these claims as part of the context surrounding the incident.

At the time of the offence, the accused was just 18 years old, and this was his first encounter with the justice system. He expressed remorse and sought to resolve the matter quickly, pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity, having spent over a month in remand.

In his defense, the counsel emphasized that the accused is currently a second-year vocational student at Nasinu Secondary School and highlighted concerns that a formal conviction could hinder his employment future. Acknowledging the gravity of the offence, the court exercised discretion under Section 16 of the Sentencing and Penalties Act 2009, resulting in the decision to discharge the accused without convictions.

This ruling reflects a balanced approach, taking into account both the seriousness of the crime and the potential for rehabilitation of a young individual who is on a path to education and transformation.
