During the Fiji Health Transformation Summit held in Suva, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu underscored the importance of genuine investments in healthcare, particularly for those in impoverished conditions. He asserted that focusing on healthcare is not just a moral imperative but also a critical political necessity that should take precedence on the national agenda.
President Lalabalavu emphasized that addressing healthcare requires difficult decisions regarding the allocation of resources, which intersect with public safety, drug-related issues, and support for small businesses. He likened the demand for hospital resources to “a shark with its mouth wide open, ready to chew whatever comes before it,” illustrating the pressing need for these essential services in Fijian communities.
The President urged health officials to anticipate future needs and to ensure that reforms are closely aligned with the needs of everyday Fijians, specifically highlighting the necessity to prioritize the well-being of the impoverished. “Let the people come first. Bring in the poor — that is what will guarantee the next government remains in government,” he declared.
Looking ahead, Lalabalavu expressed confidence that the discussions and initiatives sparked at the summit will contribute to establishing a health system that effectively serves all Fijians. He envisions a future where healthcare is more inclusive and accessible, ultimately fostering a healthier society and empowering all citizens. This outlook emphasizes a commitment to uplift the underserved and create a more equitable health landscape in Fiji.
