Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed deep concerns regarding a mounting crisis in Fijian communities, stressing the detrimental effects of excessive yaqona consumption, drug abuse, and unsafe practices. He argues that these issues are significantly worsening public health, destabilizing social order, and threatening productivity, which may inevitably contribute to rising poverty levels.
During his address, Seruiratu referenced the tragic murder of Constable Peniasi Racagi, highlighting a worrying increase in brazen criminal behavior within the community. He asserted that simply enhancing police presence would not effectively tackle these escalating challenges. Instead, he calls for a transformative strategy that includes the involvement of traditional leaders, who are crucial in connecting governmental actions with cultural sensitivities and community needs. These leaders can play a vital role in conflict resolution and foster a more inclusive and responsive governance structure.
Seruiratu pointed to alarming health statistics, noting 1,583 new HIV infections reported in 2024—three times the rate recorded the previous year. He attributed this surge primarily to unsafe drug practices, such as needle sharing and Bluetoothing among users. Furthermore, he indicated that non-communicable diseases have emerged as the leading cause of death, with an alarming 98.5 percent of adults in 2025 reporting at least one significant health risk factor.
In his call to action, Seruiratu is advocating for a collective effort that brings together government entities, religious organizations, and traditional leaders. The aim is to develop preventive and remedial strategies focused on enhancing family protection, restoring community safety, and fostering productivity within Fijian society.
