Fiji Hands SPTO Chair to Tonga, Signals New Era for Pacific Tourism

Fiji has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainable tourism development in the Pacific, recently transferring the chairmanship of the South Pacific Tourism Organization Council of Ministers to Tonga during a regional meeting in Vava’u. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka highlighted that this transition signifies the continued advocacy for a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism industry across the Pacific.

Gavoka emphasized the importance of tourism in Fiji, noting that it serves not only as a key economic pillar but also as a vital connector of cultures, solidarity, and opportunities within the region. Under Fiji’s leadership, significant regional discussions were facilitated, culminating in the approval of the SPTO Strategic Plan 2025–2029, which aims to enhance sustainable tourism practices in the area.

“The Pacific geography demands reliable, affordable, and sustainable air services. Without aviation, tourism cannot grow. Without tourism, aviation cannot thrive,” Gavoka stated, underscoring the intricate relationship between air travel and tourism growth.

In addition to the strategic plan, Fiji has actively supported the Pacific Tourism and Aviation Strategy 2026–2030, backed by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This initiative highlights the essential link between tourism and dependable air services. Gavoka also welcomed New Zealand’s introduction of a digital tourism benchmarking dashboard aimed at aiding Pacific nations in making data-informed decisions that ensure tourism benefits both local communities and the environment.

Fiji’s commitment to align with regional frameworks focuses on training, sustainability, and innovation, engaging institutions such as the Fiji National University and the Pacific Tourism Research Institute. Reflecting on his tenure as chair, Gavoka noted the success of hosting the South Pacific Tourism Exchange 2024, which connected 61 international buyers with 79 Pacific sellers—the first such event in over a decade, indicative of renewed investor confidence in the region.

Fiji’s ongoing initiatives in tourism reflect an optimistic outlook, as the country positions itself as a leader in sustainable practices. With the recent developments, Fiji aims to ensure that its tourism sector not only flourishes economically but also enriches the cultural and environmental fabric of the Pacific islands for generations to come.
