Fiji Sports Council CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure has revealed that the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team will be competing in the upcoming FSC Grassroots 7s tournament, scheduled for next week at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This event is not only a platform for local teams to showcase their skills but also serves as a vital selection ground for Fiji’s national squad as they prepare for the Dubai 7s tournament.
The announcement came during a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Agriculture Marketing, the sponsors for the Grassroots 7s event. Vakalalabure highlighted the significance of this competition, which will assist head coach Osea Kolinisau in finalizing his roster for the Dubai 7s. “This sevens competition will provide the opportunity for the Fiji rugby union to select their best team that goes to Dubai,” he stated, emphasizing the tournament’s role in identifying formidable local talent while simultaneously preparing the national side.
The Grassroots 7s tournament will feature 16 teams, including prominent clubs like the Fiji 7s and Dominion Brothers, allowing 15 local teams to test their mettle against the national team. More details about the tournament are expected to be announced by the Fiji Sports Council soon.
This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to the development of grassroots rugby in Fiji and builds excitement among fans for an exhilarating showcase of talent and sportsmanship. As the Fiji men’s 7s team prepares for international challenges, the blend of local competition and national representation promises to uplift and inspire players and supporters alike.
