The Government has indicated its commitment to addressing serious allegations linking police officers to the drug trade through established due processes. This response comes as public concern grows regarding accountability within the police force. Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua emphasized his serious approach to these allegations, confirming he is receiving regular updates from the Police Commissioner and senior law enforcement officials concerning narcotics and organized crime.

Naivalurua stated, “At the outset, I take these allegations very seriously and commit my full support to ensuring that due and proper processes are followed to address the involvement of police officers in the drug trade.” His proactive stance includes ongoing communication with the Commissioner of Police and other key officers, ensuring a cohesive approach to dealing with operational and accountability issues.

Highlighting the significance of maintaining public confidence in the Fiji Police Force (FPF), the minister acknowledged that unresolved allegations can create distrust among the community. He noted, “In terms of concerns regarding measures being taken to ensure accountability, there are allegations and adjudications based on public opinions which may taint the reputation of the FPF.”

However, Naivalurua reassured the public that the integrity of internal systems responsible for investigating such claims remains a priority. “My greatest concern is on the integrity of the check system in place to ensure they carry out the responsibility to remove any and all allegation beyond reasonable doubt and to have credibility for the whole system,” he remarked. He emphasized the necessity for investigations to be detailed, reliable, and devoid of speculation to maintain public trust.

The Government’s firm stance reflects a broader commitment to accountability and transparency in law enforcement, presenting a hopeful outlook for restoring confidence in the efficacy and integrity of the Fiji Police Force.
